How Blogs Help Websites

What is a blog?

A blog is short for “web log”, a term that's been around for a few years. Blogs aren't anything “new” per se, but they have become popular as of late. It's basically an online diary, where the “blogger” (the person writing the blog) writes about anything he or she wants to, whenever he or she wants to. People read what you typed. Some blogs allow people to comment on what was written.

A blog is no more than a web page with the content of what the blogger wrote. People search and read blogs the same way they search and read anything else on the Internet. The goal of any blogger, however, is to create a following of loyal readers. The most popular blogs are educational, informative, and humorous.

Seven Ways a Blog Can Help Your Business

How can a blog help your business? Here are 7 ways it can help.

  • Help build business relationships. People only do business with people, and there has to be a relationship of trust between the two parties. Use a blog to help people learn more about you and what you can offer them.
  • Promote your product or service. Discuss how using your product or service has solved a problem or helped another's day go better.
  • What's New and Coming. Share what's new on your web site or product, or share plans for what visitors can anticipate.
  • Puts you in the habit of updating your site regularly. Another reason to update your web site often to keep your site interesting to your repeat visitors.
  • Answer Frequently Asked Questions. Are there questions many people ask you about your product that you can use to turn into a blog story?
  • Promote other businesses. Have you used a product or a service recently that you thought was great? Blog about it. Sharing tips and advice about things you have found to help you is useful to others. You can also promote someone else's blog, and ask them in turn promote your blog.
  • Share a Testimonials. Has one of your customers said something about your product or service that may be useful to others? Sometimes another testimony of what you do can help others build confidence and trust in you.

Starting Your Blog

How do you start a blog? It's easy! There are free and paid blog services. The most popular sites that help you set up your own blog at no charge are blogspot.com and wordpress.com. Many of the free blogging companies generate revenue placing ads on your blog web site. By going with a blogging service, your blog's web site will be apart from your regular web site. If you want your blog to be on the same web site as your business web site, I recommend you contact us to set up a blog for your web site. Some people say having the blog a part of your own web site can increase your search engine rankings. Also, your website visitors won't need to leave your web site to view your blog. You will be able to update the blog through the Dash.

Excellent!! I am so glad you did an article about blogging. As you know, I have a website created by you and a blog created by me through blogspot. There is a definite advantage of creating a blog and linking it to your site and vice versa. You are correct in saying that it you are more apt to update your website more frequently when you are blogging. Relationships are definitely built and eventually turn into a customer relationship. It is a place where you can share your work and have people link to your site to view more of your work and most importantly your website. So if you don't already have one....go for it! Thanks, Dan for your info and have fun in Portland.
