A Successful Online Store

What does it take to run an effective online store?

I regularly get phone calls or e-mails from people asking me what I can do to help them with their online store.  This is a very good question, and should be something everyone considers before jumping into an online business.  The most recent example is a lady that called to tell me a sad story, that she had spent nearly US$10,000 on her web site.  She paid a warehousing company to stock and fulfill orders that come online.  She had spent money on Search Engine Optimization services from some other company.  However, despite all of these efforts, sales were not anywhere close to her expectations.  In desperation, she called to ask if there is anything I can do as a web developer to turn sales around for her.  With an emotional crack in her voice, she told me she was ready to just give up and mark her inventory down 50% just to get rid of it and dissolve the business.

What advice would you give her?  What would you do to get more out of your online store?

You have to make sure there is enough demand for your product before you start a business selling that product. Or, you need a plan to generate interest in the product so people will want to buy it.
