Why Affiliate Marketing?

Posted: 18 September 2008 at 3:03 p.m.

Imagine getting paid just for having a useful website!  In this article, I'll show you ways you can earn money by helping your website visitors. I will also list a few quilt and quilting-related affiliate marketing resources that will benefit you.

What is Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate marketing may sound like a buzzword.  At its core, it's others paying you to place advertisements on your web page.  There are many companies that are willing to pay you a commission or finders fee for every customer you send their way by placing their ad on your website.  So how does it work?

How Most Affiliate Marketing Programs Work

Affiliate marketing programs are very simple and easy to implement.  You usually place their ads on your site free of charge by copying and pasting a link onto your site, and that's it.  The "affiliate" tracks referrals and purchases from your site and pay you a commission on sales.

Most people have heard of the online book store Amazon.com.  They were one of the first companies to use this concept to build their business.  Amazon.com built its business around asking people that have web pages to review and add a link to buy the book from their own web site.  In return, Amazon.com rewarded the website owner with a commission on the sale.  How do you get started with your own affiliate marketing?

Getting Started Affiliate Marketing

Here is a list of a few affiliate marketing programs.  All programs listed here are 100% free to join.

1. The Quilt Pattern Shoppe.  All you need to do is go to www.TheQuiltPatternShoppe.com, click the Simply Link link on the bottom, and sign up for the program.  Then, add a link to the Shoppe on your site and encourage your website visitors to click on that link.

2. Amazon.com.  Do you have a book or product that you recommend to your website visitors?  Is it for sale at Amazon.com?  Earn a commission on the sale by becoming an Amazon.com affiliate.  Go to Amazon.com and click on the Associate Program link on the left side of the page.

3. Google AdSense.  You have probably come across sites that display text ads from Google on their web site.  You sign up for this program at adsense.google.com.  After you complete the signup process, you get to choose what sorts of ads you want Google to provide, and copy and paste a special link to your website.

4. Link Share.  Link Share is a very large affiliate marketing firm.  You can earn a commission from selling items from Target, iTunes, and many others big brands.  Go to linkshare.com and click on the Publishers link at the top of the page to get started.
