Using Free to Gain Market Share

I've been listening to a great book called Free by Chris Anderson.
It's
a wonderful book about how businesses all over the world in the recent
decade are making a fortune from "Free". Chris Anderson and I relate,
he's a die-hard Linux fan and into the tech world, and most of his
examples come from that world. Think about Google and all of the free
services it offers, and how it remains profitable. This book gives you
ideas on how to do just that.
Another fun thing about this book is that you google around for it, you can download the Audio Book version of this book...for free! I did so, and after listening to the book, I want to buy a print version so that I have it as reference. This "Free" audio book strategy sure works!
The premise of the book is that a business can be profitable by leveraging the concept of offering things for free to gain market share. For example, many online quilt stores and fabric manufacturers offer free quilt patterns to entice people into buying fabric, thread, etc. to go with their quilts. Others offer a free newsletter.

It's amazing to see how industries are evolving to the 'free' mentality. Information has become so readily available, it is almost hard to think about charging for much of it. There are some fascinating business models built on the concept of giving things away.by Jon on 08 February 2010 at 10:03 p.m.
