Beyond Facebook "Likes"

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was quoted in USA Today saying, "Pushing your message out to people isn't enough anymore; you have to get into the connections and conversations."
Encourage a Conversation
There is far more to our clients and their customers than the interactions we typically share in the provision of quality services. The way that communication and messages reach target markets has changed vastly in the last decade, affected largely by the emergence of social media and social networks which allows us as businesses to reach our markets in a more impacting and meaningful way.
Using Social Networks allows businesses the opportunity to find self-assembled publics with shared interests. The purpose of social media is to engage those online communities.
A social media study conducted by Cone Inc. in 2008 showed that 93% of social media users believe that companies they buy from should have a presence in social media. Over half (56%) reported feeling a stronger connection with and better served by companies they interacted with in a social media environment.
Collecting numerous "likes" on your facebook page is secondary to what you do with the online community of which you are a part. The objective to gain more followers on your facebook page should never supersede the opportunity to inspire the group to share and interact with one another and you. Simply stated: Social networks are a tool of inclusion.
In Action
Recently, Websites for Quilters decided to use this approach on a sister companies' facebook page and we were met with an overwhelming response that was both fun and enriching to witness.
What had been an average 0-1 responses a day exploded to 45 comments on one Facebook post in a matter of hours, all because we asked our followers to laugh with us and share their favorite quilting joke.
Remember, Facebook is not the only medium you can use. Social media is an all-encompassing term that includes any electronic media where participants can produce, publish, control, critique, rank and interact with online content.
Having a large number of followers isnt as powerful as good content and conversation. If you cannot carry on a conversation with them then it will hard to be social on a social network!
