Detailed descriptions for product pages

I read a comment recently on a Facebook wall post that reminded me of the importance of giving as much detail as possible for products on a shopping cart.  When you look at companies that do very well with e-commerce (such as Amazon.com), it's amazing how much detail they put in to product descriptions.  A product listing will have not only the description supplied by the manufacturer, but will often have other descriptions supplied from expert reviewers.  You will often see the product dimensions, multiple photos per product, related products, and product reviews.  All of these details give the customer a sense of what they will be buying before they hit the Add To Cart button.

Those that are successful at selling fabric online will include a lot of detail, including the fabric collection, the manufacturer, the designer, the manufacturer's SKU number, the colors in the print, the type of fabric and dimensions (e.g. 44" wide 100% cotton).  It would be ideal to show other products related to the fabric print to aid the customer in finding what he or she is looking for.

Adding details will also help those searching the Internet for something very specific find you.  For example, if you list the manufacturer's SKU number in your product description, you'll likely show up in search results when that SKU number is typed in a Google search.  It also shows your expertise and attention to detail as a company when you show as many details as you can on your product pages.
