How to get your message to more fans on Facebook

Posted by administrator on Wednesday, September 7th, 2011

One of Facebook's innovations is their news stream.  The news stream the the page you see when you first log in that shows you all of your friends and pages activity.  Not every single item posted on the pages you "liked" and your friend's profiles appear on your stream.  This is because Facebook is "smart" at determining what items you prefer to see.  This is a good thing because seeing too much Farmville activity from our friends can get old rather quickly. :)

The way Facebook determines what items to show in your news stream is based on a computer algorithm they call EdgeRank.  If you have a Facebook page with a thousand followers and you want to get your message to those followers, knowing a little about how EdgeRank works can help you optimize your message to more of your followers.

Practical Ecommerce has an interested article about how EdgeRank works.  In essence, it boils down to how often the person visits your Facebook page, who is commenting on the post, the type of post (videos, pictures, and polls have a higher score than a simple status update), and the time of the post.  There are free EdgeRank checker software apps inside of Facebook that will analyze your page's activity and make recommendations, such as the best time of day you should post something new on Facebook to gain the best EdgeRank.  I've tried it out on one of my Facebook pages (Quilter's Daily Special) and learned that Wednesdays are the best time for me to make status updates.
