Good Design Essentials

The first thing a successful website needs is a successful design. Design can be broken down into two parts: graphic design and function design.
Websites that have an attractive graphic design speak volumes about your company. You don't want a poorly designed websites to represent your brand. Great websites use color, whitespace, typography (use of fonts), placement of menu items, and photography to create a pleasing impression of your company. All these elements used well should have the calculated effect to invite your clients into your website.
Along with a pretty graphic design, a function design takes into account how you want your visitors to use your website. Making the website easy to navigate should be at the top of your objectives. A good function design considers the use of drop-down menus to consolidate links, slideshows to tell a story in a small area, and placement of links, and so forth. Some designers “wireframe” the entire site to aid in the function design process. A wireframe is usually a black-and-white stick figure drawing of the pages of your website to show how they lay out and interact with each other. I recommend this exercise to everyone creating a website for the first time.
