Internet Sales Tax - is it right around the corner?

Posted by administrator on Tuesday, October 4th, 2011

Earlier this summer, the state of California enacted a law requiring online merchants that sell over $500,000 of product to collect sales tax for orders shipped to California residents.  After tremendous backlash, California temporarily suspended the law. Other states, such as Illinois, has put similar laws in motion.

The argument is that brick and mortar stores are affected because customers shop online to avoid paying sales tax.  They want a fair playing field.  States also want to find a way to collect tax from their citizens as people shop online more and more.

What are your thoughts? Do you think an Internet Sales Tax is right around the corner? Are you in favor or against an Internet Sales Tax?

  • It was my understanding that when I sell something in my state even online that I had to charge the sells tax and have always done so.
